Welcome! I am an elementary educator based in Crooked Island, The Bahamas. I hold a Bachelor’s of Education for Primary education as a generalist, from the University of The Bahamas. Reading has always been a joy of mines. I enjoy not only reading books, but writing them as well. Growing up, I witnessed how a single teacher who believed in a student could change the trajectory of that child’s life. That experience instilled in me a core belief: education is the most powerful tool for equity and positive social change. In my early years I noticed that many students, particularly in the early grades, were struggling not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked access to explicit, culturally responsive literacy instruction. Thus, I decided to enroll in Walden University’s Elementary Reading and Literacy Master’s Program.
Seeing a student go from frustration to confidence when they finally decode a word or comprehend a story is what affirmed my calling. The joy of unlocking learning is what prompted my interest in growing as a P-12 educator and life long learner. Consequently, I enrolled in the Master’s of Education with specialization in Elementary Reading and Literacy at Walden University to move from identifying reading difficulties to understanding why such difficulties were occurring, through the use of research-based and evidence driven instruction. I am inspired to take this journey first because of my daughter who is a struggling reader and, needed more than I was currently equipped to give. Secondly, Walden’s mission of being a scholar-practitioner who effects social change also inspired my decision to make this step. In my country access to a reading specialist is limited. I want to become that resource for my school, my district and my community, ensuring no child is left behind because of limited support.
